WindNow is a live wind map for people on the water. It is available at windnow.app and as apps for Android, iOS, Wear OS, Apple Watch and Garmin watches. This page explains what data the service handles and why. It applies to all of them.

Who is responsible

WindNow is run by Luca Brozzi, the developer of the app. For anything about your data, write to hello@windnow.app.

What we collect

Account. You sign in with Google, Apple or Facebook. Firebase Authentication (a Google service) gives us a user id, and the name and email address the provider shares. We use them to recognise you and to show who is signed in. We do not send you marketing email.

Map position. Each time an app refreshes the map, about once a minute while it is open, it sends the position it is showing. That is usually your location, or the place you panned to. We keep only the latest position per account, together with the device it came from, and overwrite it on the next refresh. It is used to serve the stations near you and to see where the app is used.

Location on the device. The apps read your location only while you use them, to centre the map and pick nearby stations. The phone app may refresh in the background to keep the tracked station current. You can turn location off in the system settings; the map then stays where you last left it.

Usage analytics. We use PostHog, hosted in the European Union, to record which screens and actions are used, for example sign-in, panning the map or opening a station. Events carry your user id, not your email.

Error reports. Crashes and errors go to Sentry with the device model, operating system version, app version and your user id. They do not include your email or your position.

Bluetooth wind beacon (Galaxy Watch). When enabled, the watch broadcasts the latest wind reading to other WindNow watches nearby. The broadcast contains the reading only. It does not contain your identity or your position.

What we do not do

We show no advertising. We do not sell your data. We do not track you across other apps or websites. We do not build a history of your movements: a new position replaces the old one.

Where the data is stored

Accounts live in Firebase Authentication (Google). Positions live in a database hosted by Neon in Frankfurt, Germany. The website and the API run on Vercel. PostHog and Sentry run in the European Union. Each of these providers processes data on our behalf under its own data processing agreement.

How long we keep it

Your account and its latest position stay until you delete the account. Error reports are kept for 90 days. Analytics events are kept for at most one year.

Delete your account

On the web: open the app at windnow.app, tap the WindNow menu at the top left, then Delete account. On the phone: open Settings, then Delete account. Both remove your sign-in record and your stored position immediately. Analytics and error data linked to your user id are removed within 30 days.

You can also write to hello@windnow.app from the email address of your account, and we do it for you.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, receive a copy, or object to a use of it. Write to hello@windnow.app. You can also complain to the data protection authority of your country.

Children

WindNow is not intended for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

When this policy changes we update this page and the date at the top. A change that matters to you is announced in the app.
