The spot's default setting: a west-to-northwest flow straight off the open Atlantic that wraps around both flanks of the headland, usually running 15 to 25 knots and rarely gone for long.

A headland built to catch the Atlantic

Pointe de la Torche is the first thing the open Atlantic meets after thousands of kilometres of open water: a low rocky spur pushed out into the southern end of the Baie d'Audierne, facing due west with nothing upwind to slow the swell or the wind down. Rather than blocking the flow, the point splits it around its two flanks, which is why both sides of the headland can be sailing at once in completely different conditions.

That exposure is also why the wind is rarely absent. A west-to-northwest flow off the Atlantic is the default setting here for most of the year, and when a depression tracks in from the southwest it does not change the picture so much as amplify it — more swell, more wind, and in winter far colder water.

Two beaches either side of the point

The rocky spur splits the bay into two distinct rooms. On the north side, the open beach that carries the Pointe de la Torche name runs several kilometres up toward Tronoën, wide enough at low tide to hold surfers, windsurfers and kiters without them crowding each other. On the south side, Pors Carn is the smaller, more sheltered launch, reached through a marked channel in summer to keep swimmers and riders apart.

A kilometre north of the point, Tronoën is where beginners get sent: the same open Atlantic exposure, but a longer, gentler beach with room to fall over without drifting into traffic. The point itself is a different proposition — a fast beach break where the sandbars shift with every big tide and the takeoff sits close to the rocks.

Seasons, tides and what the wind feels like

Spring brings the combination locals rate highest: steady west-to-southwest wind, a swell that has had all winter to build, and a beach that is not yet full of July's traffic. Summer is gentler and busier — the wind still shows up most days, but the season's biggest lows have moved north, and the water fills with swimmers and schools sharing the same stretch of sand. Autumn brings the depressions back, and winter is when La Torche shows what put it on the map: Atlantic storms ride in on the southwest flow, mast-high faces stack up, and only well-equipped, experienced riders are out.

Tides shape the spot as much as wind does. At low water the beach widens into broad sandbars that expose a scatter of rocks locally known as Les Méchants, while high water narrows the launch and pushes the shorebreak right up to the dunes. The current shifts with the tide too, so a line that was clear an hour ago can be running hard by the next.

The day that made it famous

On 4 May 1986, La Torche hosted a slalom final of the Windsurfing World Cup in conditions nobody had planned for: side-shore gusts of 30 to 40 knots, waves at mast height, and rain that never let up. France's FR3 network broadcast it live anyway, betting on the forecast, and around 150,000 people ended up on the dunes and rocks to watch Robby Naish take the win from Björn Dunkerbeck, with Raphaël Salles having led for most of the race. It remains the reference point for what this coastline can produce; later editions in 1992 and 1994 never quite matched it, mostly because the wind behaved.

The point's sporting history runs wider than windsurfing. The wide, hard sand exposed at low tide has long carried char à voile (land sailing) meets, and the beach has also hosted training for France's modern pentathlon squad, alongside a steady calendar of surf and kite contests through the year.

What to watch out for

Baïnes and lateral currents are the spot's real hazard, more than the wind itself: a channel can open and shift within a single tide cycle, strong enough to carry a swimmer or a fallen rider past the break before they notice. Treat any unfamiliar gap in the sandbar with suspicion, and at low tide give Les Méchants a wide berth on the north side, where rock meets shallow water.

The point sits inside a protected dune reserve, so rigging and launching happen on the beach only — setting up on the vegetation is not tolerated. In July and August, lifeguards close the water to independent riders during supervised swimming hours in the early afternoon, which pushes windsurfers and kiters toward Tronoën or the marked channel at Pors Carn.
